A Fresh Perspective On New Year Goals

Yes, here comes another New Year’s Resolution blog for you to read. Mine is different, though 😉

2016 Recap:

Last year I wrote an article, ‘Jamie’s New Year Memo on Achieving Your Goals’. To avoid you the pain of reading another article, I’ll summarise what I set out to achieve:

Firstly, I encouraged people to write a personal mission statement, with mine being:

“It’s my mission to inform others how they can take responsibility into their hands for their health, happiness and wellbeing. I commit to leading by example, hoping to empower others to do the same. I want to maintain my integrity by being considerate and kind along the way, living by a watertight moral code.”

I haven’t read that in some time, until now. It’s really pleasing to see that I have internalised this mission statement as this has been my defacto stance all year. The biggest shift was moving from highly questionable morals to someone who puts that before anything. I am not perfect, and I haven’t been, but I have made a huge jump in that respect.

The goals I set were:

  • Launch a podcast
  • Launch an e-store
  • Be in fantastic shape
  • Move abroad
  • Put on a sellout conference
  • Learn how to instil changes in others
  • Expand my education
  • Understand my biology
  • Understand my mind

I am pretty pleased with how this turned out. I didn’t launch an e-store, but this was because I realised selling supplements is a bit of a bogus scam. What our bodies need is not pills and potions but nature. I could have made a lot of money selling ‘biohacking supplements/nootropics’, but once I began to understand what is optimal for health, I was not prepared to cash in on half truths.

I also didn’t move abroad. However, this year I have loved England for what must be the first time in a decade. Getting a grip on my mindset unlocked a lot of doors, allowing me to enjoy whichever location I was in. I still have ambitions to be abroad, for several strategic reasons, and I am working on a long term plan for this. Stay tuned.

The meat and potatoes of this article

Now that I’ve successfully massaged my ego, I wanted to get to my new idea for setting goals. Tangible goals can be important, and they certainly play a role. However, 99% of us set these long list of goals, only to be set up for failure at a later date (specifically, by February!).

I wanted to move away from this idea. Tangible goals can be set throughout the year and do not deserve the powerful focus the turning of a new year brings. Instead, I wanted to shift to how you want to FEEL. How do you want to perceive yourself? What message do you want to give out to people?

Perhaps in 2017 you want to:

  • Feel energised
  • Feel love
  • Feel joy and happiness
  • Be passionate about your work
  • Feel connected
  • Have integrity
  • Be free
  • Etc.

I guess last year I secretly wanted to feel freedom from the anger that I had carried with me for a quarter of a decade. Rather than focus on the left brain, tangible goals, I think working on a personal mission statement and concentrating on how you want to feel is more productive.

Tangible goals in themselves can be extremely limiting. What happens if you did achieve your goal? Do you stop trying to improve? By setting something more abstract (abstract in the eyes of Western society) goals, you are creating a personal ethos/code to live by. This ethos will drive and dictate every decision you make. It will influence all your goals, not just one.

So, how do you want to feel in 2017? I want to feel like a facilitator. I want to help catalyse change in others. I want to feel like my sole purpose to be on this planet is to help others create the change they want and need. If I remember this, this will affect every decision or goal in 2017.

It’ll dictate what business I do. It’ll dictate the social circle I have around me. It’ll dictate who I choose to love. It’ll dictate how I spend my downtime. It’ll dictate the language I choose to speak with. It’ll dictate where I go on holiday. It’ll dictate where I give presentations. The list is endless.

As you can see, from choosing this one mission statement you want to build your identity around, you get a cascade of other positive intentions. Which is the opposite to setting lots and lots of tangible goals that do not lead to anywhere in the long run.

Anyway, this a new theory I have mulled on over the past few months. I believe it is more effective to bring about change. It also requires a lot less effort. It brings about less stress. It’s simple

So, in 2017 my sole focus is to be a facilitator. What’s yours?

PS – Thank You

Thank you all for being part of an amazing year. It has been phenomenal. I have met some truly incredible people, many of whom I am privileged to now call a friend. Thank you for helping to facilitate change in my life. I hope I can do the same in others.

Questions taken from my Facebook page:

Some bio hackers say eat within 30 min of waking up…then how do could one IF if you have to eat upon waking up?

What hacks did you/do you use to combat any particular problem or to reach optimal and did/do you measure this?

What are the main health benefits have you noticed and what protocols would you attribute to those, whether they be as a collective or individually. (hope that makes sense)…

I’d like to hear more about supplemental light in autumn/winter, like tanning lamps/beds, UFO lights, blacklights etc As someone from UK, I think it’s cool to have our own podcaster who can share local info

Would love to hear more about what you did with EPCOT and the benefits you noticed. Also what led you to believe EPCOT would be helpful for you.

I thought it was time to share part of my journey with you all. So many people spouting advice try to give off an image of perfection. I was far from perfect, and I still am, although I am a lot better.

When I recorded today’s episode, I didn’t know what was going to come out of my mouth, but I’ve tried to be as honest as possible. I don’t like to dwell on the past when I work with people, but in this instance, I thought it would be good to share with you all. Hopefully, it will give some people encouragement out there to undertake some much-needed change.

I’d love to hear any feedback or comments regarding what I shared with you all!
